A troubled young boy unwittingly invents an imaginary friend to help him deal with the loss of his week-old baby sister. Unfortunately for him, the friend turns out to be a girl.

Trapped in a country inn while his parents head off to a seminar, young Hollis Morgan runs afoul of Daphne, an aggressive young girl, who seems to be able to go anywhere, do anything, and change personas in the blink of an eye. Daphne serves as both distraction and mentor as she guides Hollis through the many stages of his grief in a way that both frustrates and heals him. And though this is a serious time, she also helps bring back humor and the joy of living. When Hollis' parents finally return he discovers they've been to a grief counselor and they discover a changed young man.

Owen wakes in a room, with no memory of how he got there or where he even is. The only thing he knows for sure is that there's a dead woman in the room with him.

He tries to leave the house, but there are no roads leading away. The house is completely surrounded by woods and perpetual night.

With no way to get help, Owen takes it upon himself to find the murderer, but he doesn't realize that the killer is just getting started...
